The Nederburg Manor House lies at the foot of the Drankenstein Mountains in the region that is known as Paarl. This is where, in 1791, Nederburg’s anchorman and founder, Philippus Wolvaart purchased 47ha of land for 56 guilders to plant vines. The farm was bought by Johann Graue in 1937. He was a viticulturalist, tea specialist and brewmaster, and set the stage for the quality and experimentation that we know today. Johann’s son Arnold, a young winemaker and pilot, died tragically in an airplane accident and a young German winemaker, Günter Brözel took over the winemaking. Günter was a gifted winemaker, obsessed with quality, and he soon became affectionately known as the Motorcycle Marvel for his surveys of the vineyard on his 250cc motorcycle in a career that spanned 33 years at Nederburg. When Razvan Macici was appointed cellar master at Nederburg in 2001 he brought with him experience from Europe and from Stellenbosch to continue two centuries of tradition and quality.
